Frequently asked questions

Your SaltMark questions, answered.

What stays on your Mac, what's free, and how to look after your bookmarks.

01 Getting started

Why use SaltMark instead of browser bookmarks?

SaltMark keeps your bookmarks in an encrypted vault, separate from your browser profile. Organize them with folders, tags and search, then move or back up the vault as a file you control. Browser extensions let you save links without leaving your browser.

Is SaltMark free?

Yes. Saving and organizing bookmarks, encrypted vaults, backups, Touch ID and YubiKey support do not require a purchase. Signature is an optional one-time purchase that supports development and adds appearance controls. There is no subscription.

Which Macs are supported?

SaltMark requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later.

02 Store & Direct

Which edition should I choose?

Choose Store if you use Safari and prefer the Mac App Store. Choose Direct for Chrome, Brave, Firefox or LibreWolf extensions, or optional website icons. Both include encrypted vaults, Touch ID, YubiKey support and backups.

SaltMark Store is under review by Apple.

Compare Store and Direct.

Can I switch editions without rebuilding my collection?

Yes. Store and Direct open the same encrypted vault file. Store shows letter-based icons but preserves website icons already saved by Direct. Keep a backup before switching; sharing a file format does not provide live sync.

Signature activation is separate. Direct key recovery does not restore an App Store purchase.

03 Privacy & security

Where are my bookmarks stored?

In an encrypted .saltmarkvault file in a location you choose. SaltMark uses SQLCipher to encrypt the database. You decide where to keep the file and its backups.

Can the SaltMark team access my vault?

No. Your vault is stored on your Mac, and SaltMark has no remote access to it. The app does not send your vault contents or passwords to SaltMark, and contains no advertising or tracking analytics.

Optional cloud backups use your chosen storage provider. See the privacy policy for Store or Direct for details.

Do I need an account or cloud storage?

No. Create and use a local vault without a SaltMark account. Keep encrypted backups in a folder you choose, or enable optional iCloud backups with your Apple account.

Can I use Touch ID and a YubiKey together?

Yes. Touch ID can replace typing your vault password on a compatible Mac. If your vault requires a YubiKey, you still need the key when using Touch ID. YubiKey support requires a compatible challenge-response key.

What happens if I forget my vault password?

SaltMark cannot reset your vault password or decrypt the file for you. Keep your password and any recovery material safe. A backup still needs the credentials that applied when it was created.

Never send support your password, recovery code, YubiKey secret or unencrypted vault content.

04 Browsers & bookmarks

Why do Chrome, Brave, Firefox and LibreWolf need Direct?

Connecting these browsers requires setup files outside the app's sandbox. SaltMark keeps that setup in Direct because Mac App Store rules restrict installing resources in shared locations. Safari uses a built-in extension available in both editions.

The restriction concerns this setup, not every form of communication outside the sandbox. See Apple's requirements, section 2.4.5.

Which browsers can send bookmarks to SaltMark?

Safari works with both editions. Direct also supports Chrome, Brave, Firefox and LibreWolf through separate extensions. When you save a bookmark, the extension sends it to the app on your Mac, not through a SaltMark server.

Can I import existing browser bookmarks?

Yes. Export bookmarks from your browser as an HTML file, then import that file into SaltMark. Imported bookmarks are placed under an Imported folder.

Why do I see letters instead of website icons?

SaltMark uses a letter from the website's domain by default: github.com becomes G. Store always uses these letter-based icons. In Direct, you can turn on saved website icons.

05 Backups & portability

Does SaltMark sync between Macs?

No. SaltMark creates encrypted backups, not live sync. Backups preserve earlier copies of your vault; they do not merge changes between Macs. You can move a vault file to another compatible Mac yourself.

How do I move a vault to another Mac?

Close the vault, keep a backup, and transfer the .saltmarkvault file to the other compatible Mac. Open it with your vault password and YubiKey, if required.

Touch ID setup does not travel with the file, so keep your password available.

06 Open source & Signature

Can I inspect or modify SaltMark's code?

Yes. SaltMark's source code is available under Apache 2.0. You can inspect it, modify it and contribute changes. App icons and branding are covered by separate terms.

View the source on GitHub.

What does Signature change?

Signature adds accent colors, vibrant surfaces, decorative technical shapes and soft-blur bookmark selection. It's an optional one-time purchase that supports development. Your bookmark, vault and security features stay available without it.

How do I activate or restore Signature?

Store uses Apple's in-app purchase system. To restore a purchase, use Restore Purchases in the app. Direct checks a saved license key on your Mac without an internet connection. Keep a private copy of that key; online key recovery is separate and does not restore App Store purchases.

Direct Signature purchases are not yet available. See Support for purchase and recovery details.
